Working with youth and young adults I have come to realise that many of them are not sure if or when they are hearing God's voice! Many times they expect to hear a booming voice coming out of the sky to tell them what to do and how to do it and if they miss that voice to have a lightning bolt flash from the sky and knock them down!
I guess in all our lives we are often unsure wheather it is actually God's voice we are hearing or our own thoughts! I have come to know God's voice as a still small voice that often whispers to me as I go about my day. At times when I hear His voice but do not respond it does not take long before something happens to help me recall what it is that was said which I failed to respond to.
In my efforts to help young people to listen to Gods voice I have come up with a great way to help them to focus on Him in the simple things of everyday life. Place a few everyday items in a bag, eg: buttons, paperclips ect. allow each person to put their hand in the bag and take out an item. In the backround have some worship music going. Give them a few minutes to pray and ask God to tell them something about the item they have picked, then allow them to share it with the group! This might seem strange but it works really well! You will have people saying things like "The item I picked was a button. Through this God showed me how just having a button is useless, but having a button attached to a shirt is worth lots. The same as living life on our own is worthless without Christ!".
Through this they come to realise that God can speak to them about anything and everything if we just take the time to listen!! If we pray and ask God to help us to be aware of the Holy Spirit and to help us to hear when He talks God is always Faithful and will help us to become sensative to His call!!
